Words God chose for His people
God gave these words to Moses in the wilderness and told Aaron and his sons to speak them over the Israelites. The priests were not inventing a hopeful wish or offering their own protection. They were entrusted with words God Himself had chosen.
The next verse explains what happens through the blessing: "So they shall put My name on the Israelites, and I will bless them." The priests speak, but the LORD acts. His name marks the people as His own, and His promise carries the weight of the blessing.
That context keeps us from treating these lines like a formula. Their power is not in perfect pronunciation or positive thinking. The blessing rests on the character of the God whose name is spoken.
Israel would travel through an uncertain wilderness. Before them was not a guarantee of ease, but a repeated declaration of belonging: they were the people on whom the LORD had placed His name.
